Maverick Festival warm-up show for this awesome duo!
Here at Square Roots towers, every now and again we hear something that just stops us dead in our tracks and leaves us in awe of what we just listened to. It was one such circumstance that lead us to quickly book the sublime songwriting and singing talents of this wonderful pair, Anna Tivel and Jeffrey Martin last year for a show in the Square Tower. Take a look and listen to the You Tube link at the bottom of this page to see why we felt like that! And the fact that you get to see them both in the beautiful confines of our favourite small cafe The Tea Tray is a double bonus for everyone. These are amazing shows where we get to see the artist and hear the songs as they were originally conceived!
“Anna Tivel brings a raft of beautiful songs with brine-soaked images of Pacific Northwest tide pools, oceans, and the birds that wheel above them in the grey skies…” (No Depression)
Jeffrey Martin is an incredibly rare find among today’s glut of singer-songwriters: a songwriter whose songs are immediately affecting. These are the kind of songs that can change you…” (No Depression)
Portland singer-songwriters Anna Tivel and Jeffrey Martin bring their songs to life with poetic magic that describes events, characters, emotions, and the world around them.
Anna Tivel: Guitar, fiddle, octave fiddle, mandolin, vocals.
Jeffrey Martin: Guitar, vocals.
What The Critics Say
“Martin constantly draws from his artistic well in bucketfuls of musical expression, combining words and acoustic instrumentation in a way that simultaneously captures listeners’ ears, minds and hearts!” (No Depression)
“A simple, but deeply touching and, ultimately, optimistic contemplation of life, recollected in quiet moments, seeing the beauty through the sadness, this is a superb and sublime album from a voice that deserves to be shouted from the highest rooftops. Long may Anna’s heart burn this bright!” (Folk Radio UK)
“It’s tough to pinpoint exactly what it is that sets certain singer/songwriters apart from other singer/songwriters, other than the thoroughness with which their songs turn your guts inside out. And by that measure, Martin is way ahead of the pack!” (Portland Mercury)
“Anna Tivel’s voice is haunting, exhibiting the timbre of a precocious child, whispering to a teddy bear underneath the covers!” (The Bluegrass Situation)
